The history of San Gimignano
The town’s name means Saint Geminianus, after a bishop who lived there in the 6th century. In the 8th century, it became an important trading center and then was sacked by Saracens, who burned it down in 899.
The town was rebuilt over time and flourished again as a trading center until 1350, when it was destroyed by Pisa during a war between the two cities. The town had been prosperous due to its wool industry but fell into decline after this attack.
It was founded in the 10th century by monks who were fleeing from other territories due to political unrest. The town grew quickly and became known for its wine production and as a trading center for silk. In retaliation for being taxed by the papacy, the people of San Gimignano began to attack neighboring towns with crossbows (not exactly “peaceful” monks). This practice continued until 1348 when the city was attacked by Florence which resulted in more destruction than usual–and an end to the attacks on neighboring towns!
