Monemvasia is a small, beautiful town located in the Peloponnese region of Greece. The town was founded in the 7th century BC by colonists from Sparta and Corinth. It is also known as Monemvasi and is a popular destination if you’re looking to relax and enjoy yourself in a beautiful location.
The history of Monemvasia Greece
The name Monemvasia means “single entrance” or “single exit”, which refers to its geographical location: it’s surrounded by water on three sides and has only one way in and out.
In its heyday, Monemvasia was a wealthy merchant city and hub for trade throughout the Mediterranean. It was also home to some of the most important philosophers and thinkers of ancient Greece. The philosopher Zeno lived here from around 300 BC to 270 BC, as did his student Cleanthes and successor Chrysippus; all three men are credited with founding Stoicism. The mathematician Euclid also lived here around 300 BC.
The town’s economy declined in the 6th century AD due to raids by pirates and earthquakes along with other natural disasters that struck the region at that time. During this period, Monemvasia was also occupied by various foreign powers who ruled over different portions of Greece at different times. The Ottomans took over after a major earthquake struck in 1566 AD and Turks remained until 1821 AD when they were expelled by Greek forces under King Otto I (who later became King Othon) following a long war which ended with victory for Greece over Turkey).
The island is also known as the Gibraltar of Greece. It was built into a fortress by the Byzantine Empire and later occupied by the Ottomans. It was used as a prison until 1864. The island has a small population and is a popular tourist destination.
