Catanzaro is a city in Calabria, Italy. It was founded by the Greeks, who gave it its name. The city is located on the Gulf of Squillace, which is where you’ll find the Greek ruins of Naxos. The city has a population of about 100,000 people and is known for its beautiful beaches and seafood.
The city has a long history that dates back over 2,000 years! Catanzaro was founded by the Greeks and was later conquered by the Romans in 200 BC. It became an important part of their empire, which lasted until 133 BC when they were defeated by Hannibal during his invasion across the Alps into Italy. Catanzaro remained under Roman control until 572 AD when it was taken over by the Ostrogoths, who controlled the area until they were defeated by the Byzantines in 663 AD. After this point it was ruled by several different empires until finally becoming part of Italy during unification in 1861!

Chapel of San Vitalino
If you’re visiting Catanzaro, Italy, you should definitely visit the Cathedral of St. Vitaliano. The Cathedral was built in the 1200s, and it’s a beautiful example of Romanesque architecture.
In 1309, the Chapel of San Vitaliano was built, leaning against the left facade of the Cathedral in one of its entrances known as “elm door”. In three niches here, you’ll find relics of San Vitaliano (patron of Catanzaro) and of saints Fortunato and Ireneo. The construction of this Chapel, called the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, dates from 1588.
The Duomo
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta de Catanzaro is a beautiful cathedral that is part of an even more beautiful city. It was built in 1121, and it was consecrated by Pope Callisto II. Unfortunately, the Cathedral was damaged during World War II, and it was renovated in an un-historically accurate manner.

The historic center of Catanzaro, Piazza Grimaldi, is like the living room of Catanzaro and is the heart of the historic center. The piazza is a bustling hub of activity with restaurants, cafes, shops and people enjoying themselves.
